Background: Deathland is what the United State 100 year after the U.S. is nuked by Russia on January 21, 2001. The series follows a group of 6 peoples travels around the world and space via a Star Trek type transporter.
I started with book 1 of the series about a year ago and have enjoyed all but one or two. A sister series is Outlander which is staged 200 years after the U.S. was nuked.
