Next Item: (3179) Storm from the Shadows by David Weber

Publisher's Summary:

Rear Admiral Michelle Henke was commanding one of the ships in a force led by Honor Harrington in an all-out space battle. The odds were against the Star Kingdom forces, and they had to run. But Michelle's ship was crippled, and had to be destroyed to prevent superior Manticoran technology from falling into Havenite hands, and she and her surviving crew were taken prisoner. Much to her surprise, she was repatriated to Manticore, carrying a request for a summit conference between the leaders of the two sides which might end the war. But a condition of her return was that she gave her parole not to fight against the forces of the Republic of Haven until she had been officially exchanged for a Havenite prisoner of war, so she was given a command far away from the war's battle lines.

What she didn't realize was that she would find herself on a collision course, not with a hostile government, but with the interstellar syndicate of criminals known as Manpower. And Manpower had its own plans for eliminating Manticore as a possible threat to its lucrative slave trade, deadly plans which remain hidden in the shadows.

Next Item: (3177) Lensman Series #6; Children of the Lens by E. E. 'Doc' Smith

Publisher's Summary:

Twenty years have passed since the events in Second State Lensman. Kimball Kinnison and his wife, Clarrissa, now have five children - the "Children of the Lens". As the offspring of generations of selected matings, they are the most brilliant and capable minds in the universe. Their mission: to conclude the Boskonian war.
Children of the Lens is the sixth and concluding volume of the classic Lensman series, long recognized as the greatest space opera ever written.

What the Critics Say:
"The most towering figure in science fiction, thanks to the enormous scope of his novels." (Isaac Asimov)
"If you wish to understand the roots of modern science fiction, you have to read the Lensman saga." (Allen Steele)
"A finalist for a special Hugo Award for All-Time Best Series, 'Lensman' is considered by many sf heads to be the greatest of the space operas and clearly a source for such successors as Star Trek and Star Wars." (Library Journal)

Next Item: (3176) The Avengers; Season 03-From Venus with Love

Summary:
South African (http://www.otrcat.com/south-african-c-102.html) Radio Serial adaptations from the TV Series of the same name
The Avengers burst in the door of spy and super-hero adventure drama on South African radio in 1971, starring Donald Monat as John Steed, and Diane Appleby as the wonderful Emma Peel. It was based on the fine British TV series, which was very popular from the start in the UK, and is an excellent example of radio's adaptation of the television medium...as it had done with movies all along.Part pop art, part super hero, and part adventure serial... This radio show has all of the excitement and intelligence of the original television hit. Donald Monat has said, "I guess I was aiming to interpret the script in the spirit of the TV series, but in my own way - as my voice is quite different to Patrick's." Patrick McNee played Steed on the original television show, and the radio format, as national TV wasn't available in South Africa until '76, was the way it was popularized there. It was produced as usually six fifteen-minute serial episodes (with space for commercials), very unlike the hour TV show with the entire adventure. The "cliff hanging" segments keep the action moving and always leading up to a thrill to be continued. The quality of production sounds great. The radio stars even caught the fever and appeared to sign autographs as Steed and Peel to promote the show!
Exactly as the television show did, it features outlandish, quirky villains, mad scientists, secret organizations and off-the-wall situations. Each adventure presents the Avengers with a Gordian knot of plot twists that they almost always manage to fray with aplomb. (Part James Bond, part Wonder Woman...why not?) A quick scan of the stories give the flavor: "From Venus with Love" is a fine example, featuring a very odd organization with a hidden agenda. Another excellent adventure is "Super Secret Cypher Snatch" the title alone titillates! "Not to be Sneezed At..." are the Avengers.

Such madcap multi-parted adventures with two perfectly adept and adroit Avengers is a great radio example of why the pictures in the mind are the most exciting. As for the lovely Emma Peel, you may substitute the television vision of Diana Rigg if you desire.

I really enjoyed Wynonna's album. Taylor Swift's was ok, but I only liked some of the songs.

Next Item: (3174) A Miles Vorkosigan Novel; A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold

Publisher's Summary:

Lord Miles Vorkosigan has a problem that all his new power can't solve: unrequited love for the beautiful Vor widow Ekaterin Vorsoisson. Ekaterin is violently allergic to marriage as a result of her first exposure. But, as Miles learned from his late career in galactic covert ops, if a frontal assault won't do, go to subterfuge.

Miles has a cunning plan, which, of course, has to be worked out in between District succession scandals and plans for the emperor's wedding. And if no battle plan survives first contact with the enemy, just imagine what all Miles' friends and relatives can do to his romantic strategy.

What the Critics Say:

"The latest Miles Vorkosigan adventure has him campaigning in four plots....Bujold weaves all four actions into a seamless whole that her faithful readers may rank among the best books in an outstanding series." (Booklist)
"Bujold successfully mixes quirky humor with just enough action, a dab of feminist social commentary, and her usual superb character development in a sprightly SF romance that her many fans will find enormously satisfying." (Publishers Weekly)

Next Item: (3167) Journey into Space; World in Peril Starring Jet Morgan

Summary:

British Science Fiction series (1953 - 58)

Charles Chilton's classic science fiction trilogy stormed the airwaves during the 1950s. Its gripping storylines, extra-terrestrial sound effects and atmospheric music engaged the listener as never before. Between 1953 and 1958, a devoted audience of adults and children attentively followed Jet Morgan and his crew from cliff-hanger to another as, together, they faced the unknown perils of space.

The first of the three stories, OPERATION LUNA, was set in the far flung future of 1965 and told of Man's conquest of the Moon. (The fact that the English never got into space makes the date of 1965 all the more poignant.) This is the version that was broadcast weekly from 26th March to 18th June 1958, being a shortened re-recording of the original 1953 show.

The second serial, THE RED PLANET, was slightly longer at 20 episodes and was broadcast from 6th September 1954 to 17th June 1955. Set in the early 70s, this charts Jet Morgan, in his bright blue flagship Discovery, heading the fleet on a 35 million mile round trip to Mars.

The final part of the series, THE WORLD IN PERIL, ran to another 20 episodes, and was broadcast between 26th September 1955 and 6th February 1956.

The cast for most of the shows remained the same, and featured Andrew Faulds playing Captain 'Jet' Morgan, Guy Kingsley Poynter played Doc, with David Kossoff or Alfie Bass as Lemmy, and Bruce Beeby or Don Sharp as Mitch.

THE RETURN FROM MARS is the very final adventure in the series, where Captain Jet Morgan and the crew of the spaceship Discovery return to Earth after being missing more than thirty years, and presumed dead.

Another British science fiction show is Orbit Zero-One and Orbiter X. For American old time radio science fiction shows, see Dimension X, X Minus One, 2000+, Beyond Tomorrow and Exploring Tomorrow, as well as the classic old time juvenile serials, Buck Rogers.

Started book on the drive home, but the material didn't get my interest. Narration was good.

Next item: (3166) Prince Roger Series Bk 2; March to the Sea by David Weber & John Ringo

Publisher's Summary:

Prince Roger MacClintock, Tertiary Heir to the Throne of Man, was a spoiled rotten, arrogant, whiny, thoroughly useless young pain in the butt. But that was before an assassination attempt marooned the Royal Brat and his bodyguards on the planet Marduk, and before they had to march half way around the entire planet, through 120-degree heat and five-hour rainstorms in jungles full of damnbeasts, capetoads, killerpillars, and atul-grak, not to mention hostile peoples, to make their way back to port.

Under the right circumstances, even the most spoiled brat can grow up fast, and it turns out that, under his petulant exterior, Prince Roger is a true MacClintock, a scion of the warrior dynasty that created the Empire of Man. Now both prince and bodyguards are determined to get each other off the planet alive. Of course, the planet has other ideas.

What the Critics Say:

"[An] admirable continuation...The development of a Mardukan combined-arms force will fascinate sophisticated readers (the manual of arms for a four-armed, 10-foot soldier is a thing of beauty), while the overthrow of the Boman will grip straightforward action lovers in spite of the staggering body count." (Publishers Weekly)

"This fast-paced sequel to March Upcountry continues the odyssey of men and women caught in a struggle for survival and determined to maintain their courage and humor in the face of overwhelming odds. Coauthors Weber and Ringo excel in depicting the lives and times of soldiers both on and off the battlefield." (Library Journal)
