Next Item: (3058) Jack Armstrong, The All American Boy; Rescue of the Pelican

Summary:

Juvenile Series 1933-1950
"Jack Armstrong the Alllllllllll American Boy" was your archetypal teenage athlete who encountered not so average adventures. Sponsored by General Mills, kids and pre-teens alike were instructed to tell their moms to buy Wheaties.

Jack's companions, Billy and Betty Fairfield were often in need of rescue by the brave and daring All American Boy, Jack. Their Uncle Jim (Captain Fairfield) was a pilot of the Silver Albatross and led the adventurous group to locations around the world. Uncle Jim added a mature and fatherly component to the show guiding and instructing the Jack and his friends.

Though some episodes were so far-fetched to the point of being ridiculous, this is one of the most entertaining juvenile shows ever made. As crazy as some of the plots seem, the shows producers worked with anthropology professors to better understanding the local customs.  In particular, a professor in Manila informed the show's writers of Philippine culture so there is some authenticity in Jack Armstrong's adventures.
From Morocco, to Zanzibar, to Easter Island, to China and the Philippines and from Nazi Germany, to the Ayndes, to Tibet, to becoming an ally of Blackbeard, Jack Armstrong, The All American Boy has seen it all.

This collection includes all known existing episodes.

Series is improving, getting back to before "Trader" joined Ryan's group. I'm hearing bloopers by the author in the book when talking about fire arms an the caliber of ammo they shoot.

Trader's Armolite which is anther name for a M-
16 fires 5.56 mm or .223 rounds/bullet not 9 mm as the author states.

The AK-74 fires the same round as the M-16 not a 5.54 mm as the author stated in this book.

I've owned the civilian/semi-automatic version of the M-16 known as the Colt AR-15 for 35 years. I also hand load/re-load the .223 rounds along with a few hand gun caliber's that I shoot.

Next item: (3047) I Love A Mystery by Carlton E. Morse; Battle of the Century

Summary:

Now with newly completed serials, many better sound quality episodes and lots of extras including logs, photos, interviews, and more!

Following the work of mystery seekers of the A-1 Detective Agency Jack Packard, Doc Long, and Englishman Reggie York, I Love a Mystery is one of the cherished shows in radio history. Written by Carlton E. Morse, one of the foremost writers of radio. He also wrote One Mana's Family and Adventures by Morse, but spent a great part of his creative talents on I Love a Mystery.

Morse based the trio of the other famous French serial from 1844 Three Musketeers with Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Jack Packard was the no-nonsense leader who disliked women and always solved the crime long before any of the other characters. Doc Long was the comic relief of the operation and the ladies man. Englishman Reggie York was naive but physically strong.

They were a motley crew of crime solvers who John Dunning in his book "On the Air, The Encyclopedia of Old Time Radio, "described as "neither fearless nor overly principled nor entirely without blame for their own predicaments. Jack, Doc and Reggie were played by a number of actors over the years. Jack was played by: Michael Raffetto, Russell Thorson, Jay Novello, and John McIntire. Doc Long was portrayed by Barton Yarborough and Jim Boles. Walter Paterson and Tony Randall preformed as Reggie.

Fast paced, deftly scripted, and Fleischmann's dried-yeast vitaminized with over-the-top-excitement, it is still beloved by fans of radio mystery drama over 60 years after it first appeared over the airwaves. See also Adventures by Morse and I Love Adventure! For other great serials, please see: Magic Island, Captain Midnight, Terry and the Pirates, and Superman.

Enjoyable book, but I like Smith's Skylark series better.

Do Dreams Come True? Mine Did.

This morning I dreamed terrorist hid a low yield nuclear bomb in a semi trailer and succeeded in denominating it.

Filipino belief is that the opposite of your dreams comes true EXCEPT, dreams you wake up from on Wednesday and Friday mornings. So far this Filipino belief has come true for me once in the past 25 years. That one time happened around Christmas 1990. Because of this, when ever I have a dream on Wednesday or Friday involving harm to the family, I warn/tell them to take more care or be more watchful than usual.

This morning's dream details. As I said in my opening, terrorist hid a nuclear bomb in a semi trailer. The trailer was left mixed in with lots of trailers in a truck parking yard. Police were tipped of a bomb in a semi trailer and were even give unique identifying detail on the trailer.

The police found the trailer and discovered the bomb was a nuclear device with an hour left on the time/before detonation. The police/authorities in examining the device, found they could not disarm it.

At this point, the dream is a jumble of the police trying to track down and catch the informant (me in the dream) before the bomb detonates. The informant is running all over town trying to avoid the authorities.

Next my dream jumps to where I'm on the street 7 houses away from the one I grew up in. I see the blast wave from the bomb tearing apart neighboring houses.

After this, the dream turns in a miss mash of after detonation recovery and rescue efforts.

Lets hope this dream doesn't come true.

There, he becomes the first wearer of the Lens, the almost-living symbol of the forces of law and order. As the first Lensman, Samms helps to form the Galactic Patrol, a battalion of Lensmen who are larger-than-life heroes. These soldiers are the best of the best, with incredible skill, stealth, and drive. On the maiden voyage, instead of digging for a few minutes and returning, they plunge straight through the earth's crust into the 'inner world' of Pellucidar. This world resembles earth but is a horizon-less, primeval tropical landscape where the sun neither sets nor rises, and is populated by 'Sagoth' gorilla men, wild human slaves, and the ruling hypnotic reptilian 'Mahars.'

Upon arrival at this strange world, the men are immediately captured and enslaved. But soon Perry learns to read the language of the Mahars, and discovers a secret way to turn the tables!

True to Burroughs form, this nonstop fantasy thriller weaves together savage islanders, pterodactyls, telepathy, and, of course, romance.

Next Item: (3038) Adventures By Morse; City of the Dead Starring Capt. Friday

Summary:

The justly famed Carlton E. Morse had two minds when it came to great old time radio shows…he did a wonderful family drama called One Man's Family (http://www.otrcat.com/onemansfamily-p-1685.html), but also was perhaps the finest adventure writer/director radio had. His great show I Love A Mystery (http://www.otrcat.com/iloveamystery-p-1398.html) was (and still is) one of the most beloved of radio adventure shows. It was easy to see why…the Morse touch was evident in twisting plots, odd but very believable characters, and wonderfully colorful dialogue that was funny, charming and inventive as well as exciting!

Writer/producer/director Morse took the Jack Packard "leader" role and made it Capt. Bart Friday, a San Francisco-based detective and adventurer, as played by radio legend Elliott Lewis, and also David Ellis and Russell Thorson. Plus ILAM's drawling comic character Doc Long was cloned into Skip Turner, played by Jack Edwards. Missing was ILAM's "rather" amused Reggie played by young Tony Randall. Two out of three isn't bad. The show has long adventures of ten episodes along with three-partners to make up a thirteen-week broadcast contract. Thus we get "novel" length high adventures, plus "short story" thrillers that were a match for anything the pulps served up during their golden years. See also I Love Adventure (http://www.otrcat.com/iloveadventure-p-1401.html). />

Elliott Lewis had a long and fruitful career in radio, playing on the Jack Benny Show and then featured as Frankie Remley (later called Elliott) on The Phil Harris and Alice Faye Show. But a great bookend to this series is the wonderful show The Voyage of the Scarlet Queen. Lewis' work on Adventures by Morse was the finishing school that helped make his Scarlet Queen such a great show. Plus Scarlet Queen's writers were right up there with Morse! A high-adventure show list from old time radio should include the wonderful Escape, plus that classic of thrills and mystery, Suspense. Bogie and Bacall make Bold Venture a great deal of fun. You might also consider Cloak and Dagger, The Adventures of Frank Race, Jungle Jim, Moon Over Africa, or for historical adventure, the excellent show You Are There. Orson Welles productions are always wonderful radio, and many make for thrilling listening.

Publisher's Summary:

For millennia, humankind and the other intelligent races have studied the bizarre and unfathomable constructs of the legendary beings known as the Builders. But for all that study, they are still no closer to figuring out who - or what - the Builders have been, or where they have gone. Then, on the world called Quake, in the midst of the violent planetary upheaval that is Summertide, a small group of humans and aliens witness the culmination of all those years of watching and waiting: the planet Quake opens up, and something comes out - and it looks as if, at long last, the discovery of the Builders themselves is at hand.

All her life, Darya Lang has dreamed of finding the Builders, whose artifacts she has single-handedly cataloged for the rest of the universe.

Troubleshooter and adventurer Hans Rebka has his own dreams of unraveling the mystery of those artifacts. To Louis Nenda and the Cecropian Atvar H'sial, the Builder artifacts represent a once-in-a-lifetime shot at untold wealth. And close behind them come the others: Councilor Julius Graves, who does not trust anyone else to make first contact unassisted; the slaves J'merlia and Kallik, who crave only a reunion with their masters; and the embodied computer E.C. Tally, charged with finding out just what the rest are up to.

The trail that begins at Quake leads to unexpected Builder artifacts full of traps for the unwary and answers for those who know how to ask the questions. But the biggest question of all will remain an enigma, while their search unleashes the greatest threat to civilization ever imagined...

How to Disable Facebook Places

How to Disable Facebook Places

How to Disable Facebook PlacesHow to Disable Facebook Places Yesterday Facebook rolled out a new feature called Places that lets you and your friends check in to locations, Foursquare-style. If you'd prefer to keep your location private, or at least stop your friends from posting it, here's how.

If you're not convinced that posting your location can be a bad thing, check out PleaseRobMe for some evidence. Of course, if you're careful, check-ins aren't inherently a bad thing. Whether or not you want to disable them is entirely up to you, but Facebook—yet again—has made the assumption that you want to take part in all of their privacy-eroding new features. If you don't, or want a little more control over who can divulge your location, you can make this change pretty quickly through your privacy settings.

1) Log in to Facebook. From your Account menu, choose Privacy Settings. You'll get something like the picture below. Click the Customize option (if it isn't already selected) and then click the "Customize settings" link (it's the one next to the pencil below the table depicting your current privacy settings).

How to Disable Facebook Places

2) Under the "Things I Share" heading, all the way at the bottom (of that section), there are two things you may want to change. By default "Places I check in" should be set to only be visible by your friends. If you want to limit it more or less, use the drop down menu to do so. I set mine to "Only Me," which is as private as you're going to get. Below that option is "Include me in 'People Here Now' after I check in." It is enabled by default. This will let people know you're at a particular location via the location's page or in a search for people near you. Uncheck "Enable" if you don't want this.

How to Disable Facebook Places

3) Lastly—and this is the important one—if you don't want your friends to check you into Places, sharing your current location with a bunch of people you may or may not know, go down to the section called "Things Others Share" and find "Friends can check me in to Places." Initially, mine wasn't set to anything at all so the default option could be either choice. Regardless, set this to "Disabled" if you don't want your friends checking you in. Keep in mind that any friend could potentially check you in anywhere. You don't actually have to be there. If you don't want anyone playing a practical joke and checking you in to a strip club, for example, this is a good thing to turn off.

How to Disable Facebook Places

How to Disable Facebook Places UPDATE: As commenter Ryan G. points out, your location can be shared with friends' applications as well. To turn that off, you have to go to a completely different section. Click the "Applications and Settings" link (pictured to the left) and then go to the "Info accessible through your friends" section. Click "Edit Settings" and you'll see a bunch of boxes. Anything checked is available to Facebook apps that your friends are using. The last checkbox in this section is "Places I've visited," so uncheck that if you don't want your friends' apps grabbing your location information as well.

And that's it! While it's not so great that you're opted-in to the new Places feature, fortunately it's pretty easy to opt-out.
