Well they didn't butcher the book that bad. They kept the plot of John Carter going to Mars and meeting the princess, but they changed the time frame from the U.S. Civil War to the Gulf War and from the Mars in our color system to another solar system.they also abbreviated the book a lot. They did add extra characters.
