Publisher's Summary

The final conflict.

Chaos has erupted throughout the known galaxy, threatening countless colonies and orbital habitats - as the Associative struggles vainly to keep the peace. Extreme measures are called for in these times of dire crisis, and the Star Marines are awakened from their voluntary 850-year cybe-hibe sleep. But General Trevor Garroway and his warriors are about to discover that the old rules of engagement have drastically changed....

The end begins with an old-style assault on rebels at the Tarantula Stargate. But true terror looms at the edges of known reality. Humankind's eternal enemy - the brutal, unstoppable Xul - approaches, wielding a weapon monstrous beyond imagining. Suddenly, not only is the future in jeopardy, but the past is as well - and if the Marines fail to eliminate their relentless xenophobic foe once and for all, the Great Annihilator will obliterate every last trace of human existence.

Next Item: (4468) Burning Tower by Jerry Pournelle

Publisher's Summary

Return to the "vivid and unusual" (Kirkus Reviews) world of Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's The Burning City, where the fire god has retreated into myth, leaving the residents of Tep's Town unprotected for the first time in their history.

Unfortunately, a fiery fate isn't the only danger Tep's Town is facing. Monsters are coming forth from the desert - great birds with blades instead of wings, driven by some unknown force. Although they can be killed, the threat these "terror birds" pose is worse than death. Danger on the roads means no trade; no trade means the extinction of Tep's Town.

Sent to discover the source of the terror birds, Lord Sandry and his beloved, Burning Tower, must travel into a world where magic is still strong - and where someone or something waits to destroy them.

Filled with the sweeping adventure, memorable characters, and imaginative world-building that have defined the novels of Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, Burning Tower is another triumph.

See Your Favorite SF/F Authors Geeking Out For Geek Pride Day

Today is Geek Pride Day, a chance to showcase your inner geek without fear of reprisals. (Well, theoretically, anyway…the people not on the business end of the reprisal likely don't know of the immunity you possess today. Plus, that immunity is imaginary, so….)

Anywho, Here's a look at what science fiction and fantasy authors have done to get their geek on, courtesy of Open Road Media, who also helpfully shares 13 Novels to Satisfy Your Inner Geek This Geek Pride Day….

[Click below images for larger versions!]

Award-winning science fiction editor Ellen Datlow on the Iron Throne. Datlow's anthologies include Alien Sex: 19 Tales by the Masters of Science Fiction and Dark Fantasy.

Timothy Zahn, author of Spinneret and most recently Scoundrels (Star Wars), dressed as Admiral Thrawn sitting in the Emperor's chair (aka Palpatine or Darth Sidious), flanked by Zam Wesell and Jango Fett.

Star Wars author Timothy Zahn waves a lightsaber fiercely. For more intergalactic battle, check out Zahn's Blackcollar series.

Barbara Hambly, author of The Rainbow Abyss, dressed up as a pirate. Besides writing bestselling science fiction and fantasy, Hambly does cosplay, Tarot, World of Warcraft, and dances, all of which "feed and nourish the dream world."

Patricia C. Wrede with Star Wars Stormtroppers outside of the St. Paul Saints baseball field in St. Paul, Minnesota. A Jedi threw out the opening pitch and Darth Vader showed up several times during the game. Wrede is the author of The Lyra Novels, including Shadow Magic.

Sarah Zettel, author of Fool's War, a New York Times Notable Book, all done up for the Vampire Ball at the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention.

Alan Dean Foster, author of the Spellsinger series (and most recently, Star Trek Into Darkness) reading a graphic novel and working on his next book.

Coming Soon! "The Lost Stars: Perilous Shield" by Jack Campbell

Amazon has posted the cover art and synopsis of the upcoming novel The Lost Stars: Perilous Shield by Jack Campbell.

Here's the synopsis:

A thrilling spin-off from Jack Campbell's The Lost Fleet series, The Lost Stars: Tarnished Knight delivered "excellent tales of space battles and struggles against tyrants and aliens."* Now the New York Times bestselling author returns with the next chapter in the overthrow of the Syndicate Worlds' oppression…

Following a successful coup, the leaders of the rebel Midway Star System struggle to forge a government free enough to please its citizens yet strong enough to secure power. But in a world where former rulers have become new foes, an alien threat to humanity may turn old adversaries into uncertain allies.

General Artur Drakon knows three words describe someone who confides in a Syndicate CEO: Stupid. Betrayed. Dead. Despite his misgivings, he partnered with another former CEO to overthrow Syndic forces. Now, with an enigma fleet menacing their hard-earned independence, he can ill afford to trust her—or lose her support.

President Gwen Iceni believes Midway is humanity's defense against the enigmas. Syndicate training taught her self-preservation in a crisis, yet she's determined to fight for the star system's fate…even if it means joining forces with Drakon—and an officer of the hated Alliance.

Their plan places the Midway flotilla at great risk in hopes of greater reward: recruiting the personnel necessary to man warships against the enigmas. But before facing the alien advance, Drakon and Iceni must survive hidden dangers closer to home: all-too-human threats that could jeopardize Midway's freedom…and their own lives.

Next Item: (4467) Secret World Chronicle Bk #2; World Divided by Mercedes Lackey & More

Publisher's Summary

From New York Times best-seller and science-fiction and fantasy mistress of adventure Mercedes Lackey, together with a team of topnotch collaborators, comes Book Two in The Secret World Chronicle, a pulse-pounding saga of superpowers - and the very human men and women who must learn to wield them without losing themselves in the process.

After an Earth-scarring apocalyptic battle, the meta-humans have turned back a massive invasion of super-science powered Nazi war machines - and have at least driven whoever is in ultimate control of them to pause and regroup. Now meta-hero organizations Echo and sometime Russian ally CCCP must go on the offense and battle back. Task one: to hunt down the secret puppet masters behind the Nazi robot invasion, the Thule Society. To do so, the heroes of Echo, led by Bulwark and Red Djinni, face the guardians of a hidden trove of Nazi armor. Meanwhile, a sadistic genius super villain arises who is determined to defeat both heroes and Thulians alike - a villain who just may have the wealth and cunning to pull it off. It's "go time" once again for the meta-heroes, including fire-bender John Murdock, techno-witch Vicki Nagy, healer Belladona Blue, super-quick Mercurye, chameleon Red Djinni - and for their ghostly ally, The Seraphym. Somehow, they must unite in the fight against the evil and slavery that is fast descending upon the entire universe!

Coming Soon! "Starhawk" by Jack McDevitt

Here is the the cover art and synopsis of the upcoming prequel novel Starhawk by Jack McDevitt, part of the Priscilla Hutchins series coming out later this year.

Here's the synopsis:

Priscilla Hutchins has been through many experiences. This is the story of her first unforgettable adventure…

Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchins has finally realized her lifelong dream: She's completed a nerve-bending qualification flight for a pilot's license.

Her timing is far from optimal, however. Faster-than-light travel has only recently become a reality, and the World Space Authority is still learning how to manage long-range missions safely. To make matters worse, efforts to prepare two planets for colonization are killing off native life-forms, outraging people on Earth.

So there's not a lot of demand for space pilots. Priscilla thinks her career may be over before it has begun. But her ambition won't be denied, and soon she is on the bridge of an interstellar ship, working for the corporation that is responsible for the terraforming.

Her working conditions include bomb threats, sabotage, clashes with her employers—and a mission to a world, adrift between the stars, that harbors a life-form unlike anything humanity has ever seen. Ultimately, she will be part of a life-and-death struggle that will test both her capabilities and her character…

Next Item: (4464) Course of Empire Bk #2; Crucible of Empire by Eric Flint & K. D. Wentworth

Publisher's Summary

The intricate and action-packed sequel to New York Times bestseller and master tale-spinner Eric Flint and K.D. Wentworth's ground-breaking Course of Empire.

Humanity is first subjugated by haughty alien colonizers calling themselves the Jao when Earth is unexpectedly attacked by the implacable and nearly-unstoppable Ekhat, exterminators of all intelligent life not their own. Now the fragile Human-Jao alliance is put to the test. A devastating encounter with the Ekhat in a distant nebula reveals a powerful alien society that may hold the key to defeating the Ekhat once and for all. There's one big problem: they utterly loathe humanity's ally, the Jao. And why shouldn't they? It was the Jao who drove them into hiding in the first place. Once again, everything depends on those innovators and idea-generators, the humans, to quell a brewing war and forge a tripartite alliance of very different species - or be blasted to empty cinders if they don't succeed.
