Next Item: (4248) Cobra Trilogy Bk #3; Cobra Bargain by Timothy Zahn

Cobra_bargain

Publisher's Summary

The colony world Adirondack and Silvern fell to the Troft forces almost without a struggle. Outnumbered and on the defensive, Earth made a desperate decision. It would attack the aliens not from space, but on the ground - with forces the Trofts did not even suspect. Thus were created the cobras, a guerrilla force whose weapons were surgically implanted, invisible to the unsuspecting eye, yet undeniably deadly. But power brings temptation...and not all the Cobras could be trusted to fight for Earth alone. Only Moreau would learn the uses - and abuses - of his special abilities, and what it truly meant to be a COBRA.

Next Item: (4247) Sharing Knife Vol 2; Legacy by Lois McMaster Bujold

Publisher's Summary

Filled with magic, heroism, and all-too-human characters, Bujold's Sharing Knife saga is both a gripping adventure and a poignant romance. In this second volume, Fawn Bluefield, the clever farm girl, and Dag Redwing Hickory, the seasoned Lakewalker soldier-sorcerer, are newly married. Their arrival at Dag's home on Hickory Lake Camp is met with prejudice and suspicion, as many in the camp deny the literal bond between Dag and Fawn, woven in blood in the Lakewalker magical way.

Then Dag is called away by an unexpected and vicious malice attack on a neighboring hinterland, threatening Lakewalkers and farmers both. What his patrol discovers there will not only change Dag and his new bride but will call into question the uneasy relationship between their peoples - and may even offer hope of a less divided future.

Don't miss the first volume, Beguilement

Moments later, the border patrol halts another ship launched out of the moon's orbit. Its passengers are two human children, kidnapped by the most ruthless aliens in the universe. Both ships are linked to a woman on the run: a Disappeared relocated to the inhospitable landscape of Mars. Summary by Graphic Audio

Mack Bolan hits the streets of Tehran, looking for a renegade former Soviet weapons expert who sold out to the terror business—a man who knows the hiding places of the toppled Iraqi dictator's arsenal of biological and chemical agents. But the stakes get higher when Bolan makes the grim connection between the deadly weapons and individuals double-dealing in death. Those paid to hide the cache are now reselling everything—from bubonic plague to sarin gas—to any terrorists with enough cash. In a world held hostage by the madness of a few, Bolan stands determined to fight as long as he's alive to keep the balance of power in the hands of the good... and hope it's enough to make a difference.

Next Item: (4244) Atlantis Bk #5; Assault on Atlantis by Bob Mayer

Assault_on_atlantis

Publisher's Summary

By NY Times Best-selling Author Bob Mayer writing as Robert Doherty (author of the best-selling Area 51 series)

Over 1,000,000 copies sold! Amazon Hot 100 in print. Amazon Top 10 in Thriller.

In 10,000 BC, the Shadow approaches and destroys the mighty empire of Atlantis, leaving not trace of it other than vague legend. Only a handful of survivors, priestesses and warriors survive, knowing they must pass their legacy down, so that the next time the Shadow comes, mankind will be better prepared.

Now it has come back. But it wants the entire planet. Across parallel dimensions, the Shadow has consumed Earth after Earth, but one Earth has repeatedly stopped it: ours.

Now it's not a question of just stopping the Shadow. Green Beret Eric Dane, aided by Amelia Earhart, and from the past by the daughter of Crazy Horse must lead an assault into the Space Between and go to the very home of the Shadow and destroy them once and for all.

A war beyond time. An enemy beyond space. A thriller beyond your wildest dreams. Three areas on the Earth's surface defy explanation: the Bermuda Triangle, the Devil's Sea of Japan, and a small region of Cambodia. Inside these realms, planes have disappeared, ships have vanished, and, in Cambodia, an entire civilization has been lost leaving behind Angkor Wat.

The book brings to a close the riveting Atlantis series of books. Battles across time and space. Massacres and noble sacrifices. Creatures and events mankind considered legends come to life. All in one terrifying climax with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

If you enjoyed Lost, you'll love this book and be amazed at the similarities in concept (although this book was published before Lost).

Next Item: (4243) Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Publisher's Summary

A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries - and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms up to him as their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos. This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as the Twilight series - with an extra serving of historical realism.

Publisher's Summary

While Meggie and David Blue are from another planet, they're a lot like Earth kids, with similar hopes and dreams, and can't wait to grow up. BUT they also have GROSSLY UNIQUE qualities, such as blue streaks in their hair that pop up randomly and language skills that sound like nothing on this planet. The story takes these alien kids, along with their mother and grandfather, by accident, to a far planet in which the society is not only oppressive but hostile to individual freedom. People are kept submissive through drugs and brainwashing. The Blues, who have spent time in free societies recognize the upside-down-ness of this world. They're almost helpless to do anything, but do what they can, plan their escape, and vow to help others.

Publisher's Summary

Captain James Holland is the pilot on a routine flight from Frankfurt to New York, packed with people eager to be home for Christmas. When a passenger collapses from what appears to be a heart attack, Holland is forced to request an emergency landing at London's Heathrow Airport. But to his great surprise, the air traffic controllers will not let him land in England - they tell Holland that his sick passenger has contracted a dangerous new form of influenza and that the plane must return to Germany.

But when German officials also refuse the landing, and other European countries follow suit, Holland begins to suspect that he's in much more trouble than anyone's letting on. In fact, his sick passenger is carrying a deadly virus accidentally released from a Bavarian laboratory, and it is feared that everyone on board is now infected. At the same time, someone with access to the CIA's computers wants to shoot the plane out of the sky, and there is a United States ambassador on board with powerful terrorist enemies who want to see him dead.

While the panic on the ground spreads from the White House Situation Room to a small airport in the Ukrainian Republic, Captain Holland has only one concern: Where and when can he land?

Story: I've watched the movie a couple of times and always liked the first half (4 hours) best. There weren't a lot of major differences between the book and movie or at least they didn't murder the book to make the movie as Hollywood frequently does.

The book was good, but it just got boring after a while as it was so long.
