Publisher's Summary:

Lensman Kimball Kinnison has attained the goal that every Lensman seeks, and so few attain: that of Unattached Lensman, a Lensman who is accountable to no one anywhere, completely independent, completely free.

What the Critics Say
"The most towering figure in science fiction, thanks to the enormous scope of his novels." (Isaac Asimov)
"If you wish to understand the roots of modern science fiction, you have to read the Lensman saga." (Allen Steele)
"A finalist for a special Hugo Award for All-Time Best Series, 'Lensman' is considered by many sf heads to be the greatest of the space operas and clearly a source for such successors as Star Trek and Star Wars." (Library Journal)

Summary by Graphic Audio:

On assignment in the Philippines, archaeologist Annja Creed meets with a contact to verify some information. Easy enough. But when the man doesn't turn out to be whom he said he was, Annja finds herself handcuffed, blindfolded and kidnapped. And to make matters worse, she's a prisoner of the dreaded Abu Sayyaf, a notorious terrorist group.

Desperate to escape, Annja is able to flee after slaying one of her captors. But she soon gets lost in the hostile jungle, which is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of Moro warriors who fought off conquistadors with their blades. As she tries to stay a step ahead of the terrorists and not-so-dead spirits with a taste for human flesh, Annja's not sure she'll leave the jungle alive...

Next Item: (3124) Cyclops by Clive Cussler

From Publishers Weekly:

Written in the bestselling style of Pacific Vortex! and Deep Six, and with the indestructible Dirk Pitt as its hero, this latest Cussler suspense caper features, and ingeniously connects, a maverick American colony on the Moon, a fabulous sunken treasure sought by an unscrupulous, blimp-owning financier, and two cunningly devised Soviet schemes, one to steal U.S. space secrets, the other to replace Fidel Castro with a Kremlin puppet, no matter what the cost in human lives. The nonstop action involves murder and torture as well as superpower politicking, and Pitt extricates himself from one desperate situation after another, even finding time for a little romance. The writing is brittle, but the reader is not likely to worry about that in a story whose plot resembles a box of exploding fireworks and poses some interesting questions regarding both Cuba and the militarization of space.

Comment: (3122) The Uplift Saga Bk #2; Startide Rising by David Brin

By the way this book has started out, I gave up on book 1 way too early. If I stuck with it longer, it would have gotten much more interesting and enjoyable.

Next Item: (3123) Warlord of Kor (Librivox) by Terry Carr

Summary:

Warlord of Kor was originally published in 1963 as half of an Ace Double, selected by legendary editor Donald A. Wollheim. It is an interplanetary adventure, as humans probe the mysteries of the planet Hirlaj and the few remaining aliens who live there.

Terry Carr never really shone as a writer, though he did write some remarkably thoughtful stories. However, his talents as an editor and anthologist were important and undeniable, and he brought many good writers and authors into science fiction and fantasy. His first couple of novels, of which Warlord of Kor was one, did not have their copyright renewed by Mr. Carr on purpose, one understands. So enjoy the blood and thunder, but don't think it's representative of his work! (Summary by suburbanbanshee)

Next Item: (3117) Journey into Space; The Red Planet Starring Jet Morgan

Summary:

British Science Fiction series (1953 - 58)
Charles Chilton's classic science fiction trilogy stormed the airwaves during the 1950s. Its gripping storylines, extra-terrestrial sound effects and atmospheric music engaged the listener as never before. Between 1953 and 1958, a devoted audience of adults and children attentively followed Jet Morgan and his crew from cliff-hanger to another as, together, they faced the unknown perils of space.

The first of the three stories, OPERATION LUNA, was set in the far flung future of 1965 and told of Man's conquest of the Moon. (The fact that the English never got into space makes the date of 1965 all the more poignant.) This is the version that was broadcast weekly from 26th March to 18th June 1958, being a shortened re-recording of the original 1953 show.
The second serial, THE RED PLANET, was slightly longer at 20 episodes and was broadcast from 6th September 1954 to 17th June 1955. Set in the early 70s, this charts Jet Morgan, in his bright blue flagship Discovery, heading the fleet on a 35 million mile round trip to Mars.

The final part of the series, THE WORLD IN PERIL, ran to another 20 episodes, and was broadcast between 26th September 1955 and 6th February 1956.

The cast for most of the shows remained the same, and featured Andrew Faulds playing Captain 'Jet' Morgan, Guy Kingsley Poynter played Doc, with David Kossoff or Alfie Bass as Lemmy, and Bruce Beeby or Don Sharp as Mitch.

THE RETURN FROM MARS is the very final adventure in the series, where Captain Jet Morgan and the crew of the spaceship Discovery return to Earth after being missing more than thirty years, and presumed dead.

Another British science fiction show is Orbit Zero-One and Orbiter X. For American old time radio science fiction shows, see Dimension X, X Minus One, 2000+, Beyond Tomorrow and Exploring Tomorrow, as well as the classic old time juvenile serials, Buck Rogers.

Publisher's Summary:

The brilliantly unorthodox Kylara Vatta - black-sheep scion of Vatta Transport Ltd., one of the galaxy's wealthiest merchant houses - is a heroine like no other, blessed with a killer instinct both for business and for battle. Now, in the aftermath of cold-blooded assassinations that have left her parents dead and the Vatta shipping empire shattered, Kylara faces her greatest challenge yet.
There is a time for grief and a time for revenge. This is decidedly the latter. Placing her cousin Stella in command of the trading vessel Gary Tobai, Ky embarks aboard the captured pirate ship Fair Kaleen on a twofold mission: to salvage the family business and to punish those responsible for the killings...before they strike again. Since the network providing instantaneous communication between star systems has been sabotaged, news is hard to come by and available information impossible to trust. But as she travels from system to system, with Stella a step behind, Ky pieces together the clues and discovers a conspiracy of terrifying scope, breathtaking audacity, and utter ruthlessness.

The only hope the independent systems and merchants have against this powerful enemy is to band together.

Unfortunately, because she commands a ship known to belong to a notorious pirate - her own relative Osman Vatta, whom she killed for his part in her parents' deaths - Ky is met with suspicion, if not outright hostility. Rumors swirl about her intent and even her very identity. Soon, even Stella begins to question her cousin's decisions and her authority to make them.
Meanwhile, the conspiracy Ky hunts is hunting her in turn, with agents insinuated into every space station, every planetary government, every arm of the military, and every merchant house - including her own. Before she can take the fight to the enemy, Kylara must survive a deadly minefield of deception and betrayal.

Next Item: (3109) Blood & Ice; a novel of Dark Suspense by Masello, Robert

Publisher's Summary:

Journalist Michael Wilde - his world recently shattered by tragedy - hopes that a month-long assignment to the South Pole will give him a new lease on life. There, in the most inhospitable place on earth, he is simply looking to find solace...until, on a routine dive in to the polar sea, he unexpectedly finds something else entirely: a young man and woman, bound with chains and sealed forever in a block of ice. Beside them is a chest filled with a strange, and sinister, cargo.
Now, in a bleak but breathtaking world of shimmering icebergs, deep blue crevasses, and never-ending sun, Wilde must unravel the mystery of this doomed couple. Were they the innocent victims of fear and superstition - or were they something far darker?

His search will lead from the barracks and battlefields of the Crimean War to the unexplored depths of the Antarctic Ocean, from the ill-fated charge of the Light Brigade to an age-old curse that survives to this day.

As the ice around the murdered lovers begins to melt, Wilde will have to grapple with a miracle - or a nightmare - in the making. For what is dead, it turns out, may not be gone. And here, at the very end of the known world, there's nowhere to hide and no place left for the living to run.

Narration a bit rough in the first two episodes. The have the echo of built in laptop mics used. The later episodes have better sound quality like an actual mic/headset was used.

This is one of my favorite books from the first time I listened to the text to speech audio book I made.

Next item: (3107) Jack Armstrong, The All American Boy; the Mysterious Ring

Summary:

Juvenile Series 1933-1950
"Jack Armstrong the Alllllllllll American Boy" was your archetypal teenage athlete who encountered not so average adventures. Sponsored by General Mills, kids and pre-teens alike were instructed to tell their moms to buy Wheaties.
Jack's companions, Billy and Betty Fairfield were often in need of rescue by the brave and daring All American Boy, Jack. Their Uncle Jim (Captain Fairfield) was a pilot of the Silver Albatross and led the adventurous group to locations around the world. Uncle Jim added a mature and fatherly component to the show guiding and instructing the Jack and his friends.
Though some episodes were so far-fetched to the point of being ridiculous, this is one of the most entertaining juvenile shows ever made. As crazy as some of the plots seem, the shows producers worked with anthropology professors to better understanding the local customs.  In particular, a professor in Manila informed the show's writers of Philippine culture so there is some authenticity in Jack Armstrong's adventures.

From Morocco, to Zanzibar, to Easter Island, to China and the Philippines and from Nazi Germany, to the Ayndes, to Tibet, to becoming an ally of Blackbeard, Jack Armstrong, The All American Boy has seen it all.

This collection includes all known existing episodes.

Next item: (3102) Medusa; a novel from the NUMA files by Cussler, Clive

Publisher's Summary:

For seven books, Clive Cussler has dazzled readers with the "spine-tingling adventures" (Chicago Tribune) of Kurt Austin, Joe Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA(r) Special Assignments Team, but in Medusa, the NUMA(r) team faces what may be its most perilous mission of all.
In the Micronesian Islands, a top secret, U.S. government-sponsored undersea lab conducting vital biomedical research on a rare jellyfish known as the Blue Medusa suddenly disappears. At the same time, off Bermuda, a bathysphere is attacked by an underwater vehicle and left helpless a half mile below the surface, its passengers - including Zavala - left to die. Only Kurt Austin's heroic measures save them from a watery grave, but, suspecting a connection, Austin puts the NUMA(r) team on the case. He has no idea what he's just gotten them all into.

A hideous series of medical experiments...an extraordinarily ambitious Chinese criminal organization...a secret new virus that threatens to set off a worldwide pandemic. Austin and Zavala have been in tight spots before, but this time it's not just their own skins they're trying to save - it's the lives of millions.
Filled with the high-stakes suspense and boundless invention unique to Cussler, Medusa is the most thrilling novel yet from the grand master of adventure.

Next Item: (3099) The Runner by Reich, Christopher

Publisher's Summary:

Rarely has a first novel achieved the kind of breathtaking critical acclaim garnered by Numbered Account, hailed by The New York Times as "smart", "sophisticated", and "wonderful". With The Runner, Reich dazzles us once again. Set against the seething backdrop of post-World War II Germany, The Runner weaves a complex and intricately plotted tale of cat and mouse.

At the center of this fiercely compelling story is Devlin Judge, an American lawyer in Europe as part of the International Military Tribunal to try Nazi war criminals. Haunted by his own demons, Judge has a secret agenda: to find Erich Seyss, the Nazi responsible for his brother's death. An elite member of Hilter's SS and former Olympic sprinter known as "The White Lion", Seyss has just escaped from an American P.O.W. camp. Determined to avenge his brother and bring Seyss to justice, Judge is plunged into immediate pursuit, menaced at every turn by forces determined to keep him from his prey. Threatened from all sides, he'll enlist the help of Ingrid Bach, the beautiful daughter of one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany...and Seyss' former fiancee.

To track Seyss through the chaos of a destroyed nation, Judge will pay the ultimate price, putting his life on the line to reveal the dark conspiracy surrounding him. For as the hunter becomes the hunted, the chase for the White Lion becomes nothing less than a race to save the future of Europe itself.

Unfailingly gripping, rich in historical detail and brilliantly atmospheric, The Runner is a no-holds-barred powerhouse of a novel: a true masterwork from one of the most original storytellers to enrich the modern suspense novel.

Next item: (3097) I Love A Mystery by Carlton E. Morse; Bury Your Dead in Arizona

Summary:

Now with newly completed serials, many better sound quality episodes and lots of extras including logs, photos, interviews, and more!

Following the work of mystery seekers of the A-1 Detective Agency Jack Packard, Doc Long, and Englishman Reggie York, I Love a Mystery is one of the cherished shows in radio history. Written by Carlton E. Morse, one of the foremost writers of radio. He also wrote One Mana's Family and Adventures by Morse, but spent a great part of his creative talents on I Love a Mystery.

Morse based the trio of the other famous French serial from 1844 Three Musketeers with Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Jack Packard was the no-nonsense leader who disliked women and always solved the crime long before any of the other characters. Doc Long was the comic relief of the operation and the ladies man. Englishman Reggie York was naive but physically strong.

They were a motley crew of crime solvers who John Dunning in his book "On the Air, The Encyclopedia of Old Time Radio, "described as "neither fearless nor overly principled nor entirely without blame for their own predicaments. Jack, Doc and Reggie were played by a number of actors over the years. Jack was played by: Michael Raffetto, Russell Thorson, Jay Novello, and John McIntire. Doc Long was portrayed by Barton Yarborough and Jim Boles. Walter Paterson and Tony Randall preformed as Reggie.

Fast paced, deftly scripted, and Fleischmann's dried-yeast vitaminized with over-the-top-excitement, it is still beloved by fans of radio mystery drama over 60 years after it first appeared over the airwaves.

See also Adventures by Morse and I Love Adventure! For other great serials, please see: Magic Island, Captain Midnight, Terry and the Pirates, and Superman.

Publisher's Summary:

Although the exciting military career she hoped for never got off the ground, Ky Vatta ended up seeing plenty of combat when she took the helm of one of the commercial transport vessels in her family's fleet...and steered it into a full-blown war. Now the lessons she learned in that trial by fire are about to pay off - because this time, the war has come to her. Someone has launched a full-throttle offensive against Vatta Transport Ltd., Ky's father's interstellar shipping empire. In short order, most of Ky's family is killed, and subsequent attacks sever vital lines of communication, leaving Ky fighting, in every sense, to survive.

Ky is determined to identify the ruthless mystery enemy and avenge her family's name, but she needs not only firepower but information. And she gets both in spades - from the band of stranded mercenaries she hooks up with; from her black-sheep cousin, Stella, who has been leading a secret life; and from Stella's roguish ex-lover, Rafe. Together they struggle to penetrate the tangled web of political intrigue that is wreaking havoc within InterStellar Communications, on whose effective operation their own livelihoods - and perhaps lives - depend.
But the infighting proves to be infectious, and it isn't long before Ky's hired military muscle are turning their suspicions on the enigmatic Rafe, whose wealth of knowledge about ISC's clashing factions and startling new technologies has begun to make him smell like a rat...or a mole. With swift, violent destruction a very real possibility, the last thing Ky needs is a crew divided against itself - and she's prepared to take whatever measures are necessary to ensure that Vatta stays in business, as well as in one piece.
What she is not prepared for is the shocking truth behind the terror - and a confrontation with murderous treachery from a source as unexpected as it is unrelenting.
