Astronauts Jim Parker and Michael Murphy, aboard the space shuttle Charger II, were wrapping up a routine mission. Just prior to re-entry, they encountered a mysterious cloud bank in space and were never heard from again. Two years later, a metal box was unearthed at a construction site in St. Louis. In it was a previously unknown, yet apparently authentic, journal of the historic Lewis and Clark expedition: written by astronaut Jim Parker. Did Parker and Murphy alter history, or did they save it?

Publisher's Summary

From the atomic age in Atlantis to a world remote in space and time, two incredible ancient races, the Arisians and the Eddorians, are in the midst of an interstellar war - with Earth as the prize.
Hi-fi sci-fi: listen to more in the Lensman series.

What the Critics Say

"The most towering figure in science fiction, thanks to the enormous scope of his novels." (Isaac Asimov)
"If you wish to understand the roots of modern science fiction, you have to read the Lensman saga." (Allen Steele)
"A finalist for a special Hugo Award for All-Time Best Series, 'Lensman' is considered by many sf heads to be the greatest of the space operas and clearly a source for such successors as Star Trek and Star Wars." (Library Journal)

From AudioFile

E.E. Smith's Lensman novels, first published in the 1930s, are considered the cornerstone of the space opera subgenre. Serving as a prelude to the series, TRIPLANETARY begins billions of years ago with a war between two races, the peaceful Arisians and the warlike Eddorians. The book moves forward through the fall of Atlantis, the Roman Empire, and three world wars as the benevolent Arisians secretly establish a group of Earthmen capable of protecting the galaxy from evil. Reed McColm narrates with precision, and with just enough of a swagger in his voice to call to mind the action heroes of an earlier era. His voice adds a lightness and a glint of humor that complement Smith's humorless writing. The production includes a foreword by science fiction historian John Clute. (c) AudioFile 2007

(2995) Outlander Series Bk #5; The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon

Publisher's Summary

Diana Gabaldon's award-winning Outlander novels, four dazzling best sellers, feature 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century time-traveling wife, Claire Randall. Now, in this fifth volume, Gabaldon continues their extraordinary saga.
The year is 1771, and war is coming. Jamie Fraser's wife tells him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy - a time-traveler's certain knowledge.
Born in the year of Our Lord 1918, Claire Randall served England as a nurse on the battlefields of World War II, and in the aftermath of peace found fresh conflicts when she walked through a cleftstone on the Scottish Highlands and found herself an outlander, an English lady in a place where no lady should be, in a time - 1743 - when the only English in Scotland were the officers and men of King George's army. Now wife, mother, and surgeon, Claire is still an outlander, out of place, and out of time, but now, by choice, linked by love to her only anchor - Jamie Fraser. Her unique view of the future has brought him both danger and deliverance in the past; her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through the perilous years ahead - or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.
The Fiery Cross is the fifth of Diana Gabladon's time-travel novels.

Summary:

Esmay Suiza wasn't a member of a great Navy family like the Serranos. She'd had to make her way on grit alone, which meant it wasn't likely she'd ever make admiral and "hoist her own flag." Well, that was fine with her: all Esmay wanted was a secure berth where she could be part of something greater than herself, and otherwise just live her life in peace. But what we want or think we want from life and what we get are seldom the same—and one day Esmay found herself in the middle of a space battle, and the senior surviving officer in a mutiny against a traitorous captain. Suddenly she has no choice: she must take command and win—and thereby become both the youngest and lowest-ranking member of Fleet ever to win a major battle. While Esmay may not want to be a hero, it looks like she just can't help it, because Once A Hero.... (Part 1 of 2)

A massacre at a remote diner in the Nevada desert puts Mack Bolan in the middle of a black ops mission gone wrong. Bolan goes to war with faceless enemies cloaking their evil in the American flag. He's up against a rogue operative and his assassins, and a sanitizing force of Area 51 blacklists. In a secret world where power too often ends up in the wrong hands, Bolan is applying maximum heat to flush out the shadow men who kill and conspire in the name of God and country.

Publisher's Summary

General Patrick McLanahan's new Aerospace Battle Force has grown into a full-fledged task force based on the Armstrong Space Station. Providing almost instant access to space and every corner of the globe using the Black Stallion spaceplanes, the ABF's powerful network of satellites and unmanned aircraft controlled from space cannot only attack any target anywhere on the planet within hours, but can even invade any computer network as easily as making a phone call.
But the program has its critics and doomsayers, including Russia, the United Nations, and the American press. Wealthy, Western-educated, and sophisticated Russian president Leonid Zevitin uses a combination of top-secret anti-spacecraft weaponry, fearmongering, and new U.S. president Joseph Gardner's own egotism in an effective plan to eliminate all support for the space program.
Gardner and his allies in Congress and the Pentagon will stop at nothing - even destroying one of their own - to get what they want. Yet McLanahan and his forces refuse to allow the Russian aggression to stand. McLanahan ignores directives from the White House and Pentagon to stand down and orders the ABF to attack secret Russian bases in Iran.
President Gardner orders McLanahan's immediate arrest. But before authorities can throw him in jail, they have to figure out how to retrieve him from the space base orbiting the Earth.
Currently in control of the Aerospace Battle Force from Armstrong Space Station, McLanahan closely watches Russia's movement of weaponry while defending himself against the president's attempts to discredit him. In a race against time, McLanahan must outmaneuver his own countrymen, defeat the Russians, and expose the truth...or die trying.

From AudioFile

It is 2009. Is this the year a military coup will occur in the U.S.? And does the American Aerospace Command intend to use its access to the Space Station to protect the United States--or do its leaders have other intentions? Phil Gigante's characterizations of Presidents Gardner and Zevitin, of the United States and Russia, clearly reflect their personalities, the tension between their countries, and the mind game that Zevitin is winning. The other primary characters are also vividly presented. The suspense is thick, although sprinkled with interludes of levity, which Gigante makes the most of. Overall, the premise of the book is a bit farfetched--or at least the listener will hope so! (c) AudioFile 2008.

(2981) The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury

Publisher's Summary

"The justly famous, most excellent Martian Chronicles is a congeries of magnificent short tales, linked by a cleverer-than-thou framing mechanism intended to fool the eye 24 times a second," said The Los Angeles Times, after hailing Bradbury as a writer included "among the mere handful of noted and memorable American writers who have made a reputation from the short story."
"They had a house of crystal pillars on the planet Mars by the edge of an empty sea..." So begins this classic chronicle of the colonization of Mars. More fantasy than science fiction, the stories create a rich allegory of the tragic moral blindness of mankind. In lyrical prose, Bradbury describes the decline of the mysterious and fragile Martian civilization, overwhelmed by the human newcomers. These are tales not of bug-eyed monsters and laser-wielding spacemen, but of common people - families, truck-stop owners, priests - who confront a new world with their human pride, fears, tenderness, and greed intact. And at the heart of each story lies the basic conflict between man's search for new frontiers and his irresistible urge for the comfort of the past. Bradbury's writing is a brilliant blend of satire and wonder, terror and innocence, bitterness and poetic fantasy.

Born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1920, Ray Bradbury polished his craft by writing science fiction, horror, and murder tales for pulp magazines. He has published over 500 stories, and some of the most famous science fiction and fantasy works in the English language, including "The Illustrated Man" and Fahrenheit 451. Long recognized as the master of the genre, Bradbury writes tales that combine luminous imagery with penetrating insight, and a freshness that continues to attract new generations of readers.
